How to get the lighting you need on your college or university campus to be and feel safe and reassured while also protecting human health and wildlife, saving energy, and enjoying the natural ambiance of the night.

Every college and university needs appropriate outdoor lighting to provide a reassuring environment for night-time activities. Walkers on campus at night need glare-free wayfinding lighting on paths to destinations. Both the students and their families at home need to have confidence in the campus lighting. Additional benefits include lower energy costs, better sleep and improved public health, healthier ecosystems including all plants and animals, and the ability to see and study the Milky Way and the starry sky.
Most colleges and universities have accumulated their lighting haphazardly over the years without much consideration of the science of lighting design. The Campus SHINE program shows you how to assess the campus outdoor lighting environment and develop a more coherent and holistic lighting plan based on sound scientific principles and accumulated experiential wisdom so that lighting decisions going forward reflect best practices. It will take you through the process of building a team of faculty, staff, and students to assess your campus lighting and develop plans to improve it. We provide ample tools and suggestions as well as examples and case studies. |
